Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Pattern Keepers?

The Pattern Keepers is a year-long adventure delivered by mail, with one packed 3-ounce letter arriving each month for a full year. Every letter continues Nora and Calvin's story and includes puzzles, games, hands-on activities, and other surprises as they uncover the hidden patterns connecting math, nature, science, and the world around us.

What age is it for?

The Pattern Keepers is recommended for ages 7–11, but many families enjoy the adventure together. Younger siblings often love listening to the story, while the games and activities can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages.

Every letter also includes a note for curious grown-ups, filled with fascinating ideas and connections you may have never encountered before. These notes are meant to show children that learning doesn't stop when you become an adult, and many of the concepts are wonderful to explore together.

Can my child complete the letters independently?

Many children can complete the story and most activities independently. However, every child learns differently, and younger readers may occasionally need a little help with certain puzzles or activities. We also include two-player games, conversation prompts, and notes for grown-ups that encourage families to explore the adventure together.

How many letters will I get?

One letter arrives every month for a full year, each with a new chapter of the story, activities, and puzzles. There are 12 letters in total.

Is the first letter really free?

Yes! We'd love to send one to everyone, but as a small independent publisher, we can only offer a limited number of free first letters. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

How much does it cost?

Your first letter is completely free. Inside, you'll find a QR code to subscribe for the remaining 11 letters. The subscription is $14.95 per month, and you can cancel anytime. After the twelfth and final letter arrives, your subscription ends automatically.

Can I subscribe right away instead of reserving a free first letter?

Not yet. We've been overwhelmed by the interest in The Pattern Keepers, so we're expanding gradually to make sure every family has a great experience. For now, we're inviting new families through our free first-letter program. Once you've received your first letter, you can subscribe to continue the adventure. As we grow, we hope to open subscriptions directly to everyone.

About Us

We're Zac and Lana, a husband-and-wife team based in Chicago.

Zac has a background in mathematics and computer science, and Lana is a software engineer with experience in teaching and creative writing.

We created The Pattern Keepers for our two young boys because we wanted them to experience a side of math filled with curiosity, adventure, and wonder, not worksheets and memorization. We hope it brings that same sense of wonder and discovery to your family, too.
